The Spring Flower Show is always a wonderful event, and this year was no exception..
Harrogate’s 2016 annual Spring Flower Show took place on 21-24th of April and was attended by some of the region’s greatest gardeners and budding flower enthusiasts. Dating back to the 1920s, the show has grown in size and attendance from its humble Winter Gardens beginnings to now attracting visitors in their thousands each year to its current Great Yorkshire Showground location.
As well as celebrating the season in spectacular floral fashion, the event showcased the best in horticulture and paid tribute to some of Britain’s best landscapers and all-round plant professionals.
Visitors were invited to enjoy a picturesque stroll along The Avenue and draw inspiration from the stunning spring show garden displays. The Plant Pavilion, which was new to this year’s event, was made up of over 100 leading nurseries with a vast selection of herbs, plants and scented flowers on show.
One of the weekend’s highlights was the 12ft by 12ft carnival costume – the first of its kind to be made from 1,400 fresh flowers and foliage. Incorporating more than 30 metres of aluminium tubing and fibre glass rods to hold the flowers in place, the magnificent piece was created by international carnival designer Hughbon Condor and award-winning florist Helen James, and took a total of 155 hours to make.
The show also hosted Britain’s largest florist and flower arrangement exhibition with more than 150 delicate and extremely impressive works of flower art. For those looking to brighten up their gardens at home there was some great shopping to be done with thousands of outdoor goodies and handmade craft gifts on offer.
There were a number of talks and demonstrations taking place each day as well as some delicious dishes on the menu in the Plot to Pot Cookery Theatre. With the weather on our side and lots to see and do, there’s no surprise why the flower show has been dubbed the Chelsea Flower Show of the north. See you all in Autumn!
